(Dan Tri) – Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of Vietnam’s ASEAN SOM, chaired the opening activities of the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 53) and related conferences.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that on the morning of September 7, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of Vietnam’s ASEAN SOM, chaired the ASEAN Senior Officials Meetings (SOM) and the Executive Board of the ASEAN Cooperation Committee.

These are the opening activities of the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 53) series and related conferences.

Opening the Conference, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized that in the face of the unpredictable developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, ASEAN needs to be steadfast in its commitments and united in all actions to accelerate the process of building the Community.

ASEAN Senior Officials reviewed the preparations for AMM-53 and related conferences.

In addition, the Foreign Ministers will also discuss enhancing the central role of ASEAN, especially ways to ensure that ASEAN continues to be the leading force in the region leading the cooperation process for peace.

Southeast Asia nuclear weapons-free zone treaty

The Ministers continued to affirm the importance of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) as the key document, demonstrating ASEAN’s commitment to maintaining a weapon-free Southeast Asia region.

ASEAN Senior Officials welcomed the SEANWFZ signatories to further strengthen cooperation with relevant international organizations, especially between the ASEAN Network of Atomic Energy Regulatory Authorities (ASEANTOM).

AMM 53: Enhancing centrality

Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung updated countries on the preparation process for organizing AMM 53 and related conferences.

The Deputy Minister said that at these conferences, Foreign Ministers of the countries will affirm ASEAN’s determination to enhance its central role, promote solidarity, promote cooperation, and promote the successful construction of the Republic of Vietnam.

At the end of the Conference, Senior Officials agreed to submit to Foreign Ministers recommendations related to cooperation within ASEAN as well as between ASEAN and its partners, expressed through many different documents of the Conference.
